Beware of substandard quality and potential safety hazard. Dec 27, 2010
By Angelbud Please let me preface this review by admitting I rarely share my opinion even though I am an avid Amazon shopper. Working full time in Social Services with a long commute and two small children, I simply have to prioritize my time and writing reviews has not been one of those priorities. Today, I have taken the time to write because I wanted to warn other potential buyers of the substandard quality associated with this particular toy box.
We purchased this KidKraft toy box and intended to use it as a gift from Santa for our one-year-old daughter. We had planned to fill it with a variety of toys for her to open on Christmas morning. We have previously purchased two toy boxes manufactured by KidKraft and purchased both of them on Amazon for our three-year-old son. There were never issues with quality. (However, we had not purchased this particular style/finish in the past.)
I read all of the reviews for this product. (Yes. I consistently read reviews but don't contribute like I should.) The general consensus was that this was a quality product with a reasonable price. I only read one review that indicated there were quality issues. I should have paid more attention to that particular review because I could have avoided this nightmare. He wasn't fooling!
Late on Christmas Eve 2010, we opened the packaging and began assembling the toy box. Immediately, I noticed the "cherry finish" was shoddy and looked like it had been sprayed on inconsistently. It was also more of a brown color than a cherry finish. But, since Christmas morning was just hours away, I decided I could accept the finish discrepancy. I then noticed the toy box was manufactured with poor quality particle board...not what I had expected from an "all-wood" product. I was getting a bit perturbed but thought I might be able to live with particle board as long as the toy box served its purpose of safely containing toys. We then started to assemble the toy box. What a nightmare! The screws went straight through the particular board and into what would become the inside of the toy box. (Her father is a seasoned professional contractor and had assembled the other two KidKraft toy boxes.)
The sharp screw tips protruded into the interior of the toy box and were an unquestionable safety hazard to anyone using toy box. The particle board disintegrated around the screws and actually began to splinter off. The joints were also substandard. In my opinion, the toy box would not withstand regular usage or the weight of a child. At this point, I demanded we stop the assembly process and start wrapping all of the intended contents. I could not give my child a gift that would unquestionably cause her harm. I immediately accessed Amazon and requested to return the item due to is being defective and thus, a safety hazard.
Please take heed before purchasing this item. There are other KidKraft toy boxes out there that are of much better quality and in the same price range. This particular model is of substandard quality and is a potential safety hazard. It needs to be recalled. Beware.

Kid Kraft Austin Toy Box Feb 17, 2010
By Tygerus This was terrible and cheaply built! I hate it! It said it was made of wood but its actually particle board. When I was screwing down the screws. It ended up pulling the end nut through the particle board and damaging the paint and board. And I hadn't even finished making the screw flush with the board nor was I using any force!! The hole is so much bigger than the end nut that the nut swims around in it and makes it a pain to center to get the screw into it. I did not assemble it because the particle board made it so flimsy that I am afraid to even put it together to let my child use it. I was so excited that I threw out the box and I am pretty sure I can't return it now. I have never been so disappointed in something! The fact that it even has a star not by choice. If there was a negative star, I would have done it. DON'T BUY IT!!!

Espresso is more of a Cherry color! Dec 01, 2010
By Atlanta parent I bought this toy box because it the perfect size and it had a variety of colors. Since my daughter's furniture is espresso, I ordered the espresso. When the box arrived, my husband and I were very excited to put it together but the excitment quickly went away when we saw the color. It is NOT a dark, espresso color as shown in the pictures. It is a cherry wood color. We have Cherry wood furniture in our master bedroom and the toy box is an exact match.

perfect for what I was looking for! Dec 17, 2011
By rachael harrison I read all the reviews and purchased this toy box in cherry despite some of the warnings. I am glad I did. It is exactly what I was looking for and expected for the price. The cherry finish is beautiful and goes perfectly with the family room furniture. I did not have any problems putting this together alone, and no screws broke the wood. It is sturdy enough for my 5 year old and 18 month old, (not to mention myself) to sit on. The lid stays up perfectly, which makes it super safe for my 18 month old. It actully looks more expensive than it was, which is always great. I love this product, and would totally recommend it to a friend.

Not just a "toy" box Dec 26, 2011
By my girls' mom I bought this toy box, in cherry, as a place for my 12yo to keep her Star Trek collectibles. The height was important so that it fits under our windows which swing to the inside.
The package arrived overnight with Amazon Prime and packaging was excellent and easy to open. I put this together by myself in about 20 minutes. I love the sturdiness of the built piece and am impressed with the hinge on the lid-- does exactly what it's supposed to do. The finish on the piece is lovely and with care in using a good furniture polish looks like it will hold up well. I'll be making or buying a cushion for the top to make it a little 'window' seat.
I'm so impressed with the quality and the color I'm going to purchase 4 more over the next few months to put under windows in our living area to store games, pots and pans, and everything else I want to 'hide' in a nice window bench. A good place to store my sewing machine and notions, too. I highly recommend this box.
